Where you arrive
Select Ocean Gateway or Maine State Pier / Portland Ocean Terminal as confirmed by your ship. Both serve the downtown waterfront, but the walking estimates start from different public exits.
Getting around
Old Port and the Eastern Promenade Trail suit walking outings. Portland Head Light is outside downtown and needs a vehicle in this planner. Arrange a return pickup before leaving for the lighthouse.
Make time for
Browse Old Port, follow a short out-and-back section of the Eastern Promenade Trail, or see the lighthouse grounds at Fort Williams Park.

Wander the compact waterfront neighborhood, with time for shop browsing and harbor views.

Uneven paving and cobbled side streets require care. Use crossings around Commercial Street and stay out of working wharf areas. Purchases are extra.

Eastern Promenade Trail
Take a short out-and-back waterfront walk toward East End Beach, returning to the India Street end of the trail.
45–75 minutes to visit
The lower trail is mostly level and shared with cyclists. Optional climbs to the upper park are outside this route. Watch for closures, rail crossings and slippery conditions.
